Tony Pulis has been fired by Championship side Middlesbrough after missing Premier League promotion to the Premier League.

According to The Mirror, the ex-West Brom and Crystal Palace manager was charged to lead Middlesbrough back to the EPL at the end 2018-19 campaign, having replaced ex-boss Garry Monk midway through the 2017-18 season.

However, after netting 49 times in 46 games, the Teesiders failed to make it to the Championship playoffs by a single point after finishing seventh.

Most of Middlesbrough fans are unhappy with Pulis’ ultra-defensive approach – often starting with a back five – the club opted not to renew his contract.

“Middlesbrough FC can confirm that the contract of manager Tony Pulis will not be extended,” a statement from the club read in part, even as ‘Boro chairman Steve Gibson took out time to applaud Pulis achievements during his 18 month stay at the club.

“I’d like to thank Tony for his hard work and commitment over the past 18 months. He has been a joy to work with and a complete gentleman.

“Two years ago we invested heavily in the squad in terms of transfer fees and salaries in an attempt to regain our Premier League status. This happened before Tony’s arrival.

“Over the past 18 months Tony has been proactive, not only in the ambition to win football matches and promotion to the Premier League, but also in addressing our financial position in order to comply and respect Championship Fair Play criteria.

“He has ensured that the club is stable and strong for the future. He leaves us in excellent condition.

“Tony’s backing of our Academy has seen many youngsters make their first team debuts. I am sure that Dael Fry, Lewis Wing, Marcus Tavernier and Nathan Wood will be grateful for the faith he has shown in them.

“I’m sorry to see Tony leave but our friendship and my gratitude will remain. Tony and his family will always be welcome at Middlesbrough Football Club,” Gibson submitted.

Jonathan Woodgate, according to reports is leading the race in to take his first steps in management as Pulis’ replacement.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that newly promoted Premier League side Norwich City want to sign John Obi Mikel this summer.

The Canaries have been heavily linked with the 32-year-old, who will become a free agent this summer, after his short spell with Middlesbrough expires in June.

Mikel Obi joined the championship side during the winter transfer window from Chinese Super League side Tianjin TEDA and scored one goal in 18 appearances.
