Maverick US Senator John McCain diagnosed with brain cancer

US Senator John McCain is battling brain cancer, it was revealed last night.

Doctors discovered a brain tumour after the Republican Arizona senator underwent surgery to remove a blood clot above his left eye.

Tissue analysis revealed that a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma was associated with the clot, his office said.

The 80-year-old former presidential nominee has been recovering at home following the procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix.

A statement from the hospital read: “The Senator and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team.

“Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.”

McCain’s doctors said he was recovering from his surgery “amazingly well” and that his underlying health was excellent.

His daughter, Meghan, paid a touching tribute to her father on Twitter following his shock diagnosis.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called McCain, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, and a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, a hero and said he looked forward to having him back in Washington.

“We all look forward to seeing this American hero again soon,” McConnell said in a statement.
