– Adegboye Onigbinde has disclosed that 1984 Africa Cup of Nations final between Cameroon and Nigeria was rigged
– The 81-year-old maintained that some high-placed Nigerians never wanted the Super Eagles to emerge victorious
– Onigbinde also faulted Gernot Rohr, for writing off Nigeria’s chances of winning the ongoing 2019 AFCON, before hostilities commenced
Ex-Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, has revealed the final game of 1984 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) between Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions and Nigeria’s Super Eagles was rigged.
According to The Guardian citing allnigeriasoccer.com report, the Modakeke high chief, who was on the bench during the encounter at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Abidjan, explained that some high-placed Nigerians never wanted the Super Eagles to emerge victorious at the end of the tournament.
The 81-year-old Onigbinde also faulted eggheads of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for blacking him out of the present set-up despite his contributions to the growth of Nigerian football in the past.
“I sympathize with Nigeria. I had been to this competition before. But now I am not relevant with Nigerian football… they have declared me irrelevant and I am enjoying my rest.
“In 1984, Nigeria placed second under my control and that was as a result of intrigues and sabotage by Nigerians so I wish Nigeria the best of luck.
“Certainly, I would have won in 1984, at the right time I will reveal the secret to Nigerians, the final match was bought by some prominent Nigerians,” Onigbinde was quoted as saying on Cool FM Abuja.
Legit.ng put a call across to Onigbinde to get a confirmation about his comment as he made it known that he intends to drop a memoir concerning the alleged plot that took place in the 1984 AFCON final.
Onigbinde, who was also in the dugout for Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea told Legit.ng that a particular player intentionally caused Nigeria’s defeat against Argentina and Sweden at the tournament, in an attempt to sabotage the team’s effort at the tournament.
When Legit.ng probed further, he refused to mention names but advised we have a strong look at the game against Argentina and Sweden, noting that “a particular player caused the goals in both games and that was why I had to change my team in the last game against England.”
Onigbinde also noted that Franco-German manager Gernot Rohr wrote off the nation’s chances of winning the Africa Cup of Nations holding in Egypt ahead of the tournament.
“That is left to the administrators, don’t forget that before the competition started our coach rated Nigeria out of prominence,” submitted Onigbinde.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Gernot Rohr has called on the Super Eagles to put the semi final defeat by Algeria behind them and finish the competition on a high.
The three-time African champions were subjected to a painful 2-1 defeat to the Desert Foxes and the Nigerian side will be looking to redeem their image against Tunisia in the third place playoffs.
And Rohr has urged his team to stay focused on their match against the Carthage Eagles and added that team has a promising future despite the slip up.
