Senate backs Buhari, passes bill shifting Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12

A year after President Muhammadu Buhari announced that June 12 would be celebrated as the new Democracy Day, the Senate has passed the public holiday act amendment bill.

The bill recognised the date as replacement of May 29 for Nigerians to commemorate the return to the civilian government.

Channels TV reports that the federal lawmakers considered the bill seeking to amend the Public Holiday Act on Thursday, May 16.

The bill, which is in concurrence with that of the House of Representatives, will now be forwarded to the president for assent.

Recall that Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari announced that June 12 would be celebrated as the new Democracy Day.

The president announced this via his Facebook page on Wednesday, June 6. The president also announced that the late Chief Moshood Abiola who was adjudged the winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 election will be posthumously awarded the highest Honour in the land, GCFR.

He said: “Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.

“We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections.”

Legit.ng also previously reported that the House of Representatives approved that June 12 be marked as Democracy Day in Nigeria following the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.

At a plenary on Thursday, December 6, the lawmakers at the lower chamber approved the amendment in the act. With the new development, May 29 has been deleted in the establishing act, paving way for June 12 as the new Democracy Day in Nigeria.
