Former Premier League star names shuns Kanu, names Okocha his best Nigerian player ever
– Austin Okocha still has many fans despite retiring from football over a decade ago
– Okocha spent just four seasons at Premier League side Bolton Wanderers and led them to EFL Cup final
Former Liverpool defender Jim Beglin has named Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha as his best ever Nigerian player.
The 56-year-old who spent six seasons with the Merseyside outfit made this known during his Q&A session on Twitter tagged #ASKJimBeglin.
Though he never had the chance to play against the Super Eagles legend, the ex-attacker’s quality display of skills and good control of the ball must have motivated his decision.
Okocha first arrived in England in 2002 after signing for Premier League side Bolton Wanderers where he spent four good seasons.
He scored 18 goals and three assists in 141 appearances across competitions and also led them to the final of the EFL Cup in 2004 but they lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough at the end of the game.
The 46-year-old former Enugu Rangers midfielder also won the Premier League player of the Month award in November 2003.
Okocha’s brilliant display of skills earned him several prestigious awards including BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2003 and 2004 – during his days at Bolton.
‘Jay Jay’, as he is fondly referred to was crowned Africa Cup of Nations Best Player in 2004 – the same year he finished as joint top scorer with the likes of Patrick Mboma of Cameroon, Mali’s Frédéric Kanouté and two others.
He won the most prestigious trophy on the continent with Nigeria in 1994 and scored 14 goals in 73 appearances during his 13-year reign with the Super Eagles.
Legit.ng earlier reported that two-time African footballer of the year El hadji Diouf has claimed that Nigeria’s Austin Jay Jay Okocha would have been the world’s best player of all time if he was not African.
The Senegalese legend and the ex-Super Eagles captain were teammates at Bolton Wanderers between 2004 and 2006 before Okocha moved to Qatar.
Okocha who featured for Bolton between 2002 and 2006 scored 14 goals in his 124 appearances including a famous strike against West Ham United which was voted team goal of the season.
